The US dollar set an unprecedented record in Tehran's free market on Tuesday, 10 Shahrivar 1405 (September 1, 2026). According to Donya-e-Eqtesad, the dollar reached 213,770 tomans at 1:08pm local time, the latest point in a steady climb that began at 211,210 tomans at 11:28am and reached 212,220 tomans by 12:20pm. At the same time, the pricing site Tgju.org put the live dollar rate at 213,400 tomans, up 4,100 tomans from yesterday's previous record of 209,300 tomans, with today's session high at 213,620 tomans; Alanchand.com reported the dollar reaching 214,700 tomans at 4:05pm, up 3,600 tomans (1.71 percent) from yesterday's rate of 211,100 tomans. Today's jump coincided with escalating political tension between Iran and the United States. According to Ecoiran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Kyrgyzstan, said Iran would respond immediately if the United States returned to its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, while Axios, citing three US officials, reported that Donald Trump and senior advisers are weighing limited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz.
