US crude oil (WTI) fell to around 83.3 dollars a barrel on Friday, August 28, 2026 (6 Shahrivar 1405), down roughly 0.2 percent from the previous day and about 4 percent for the week, according to Trading Economics. The decline reflects traders increasingly viewing Iran's standoff as an economic and sanctions confrontation rather than a threat to physical oil supply, while improving flows through the Strait of Hormuz and a proposed Iran-Oman corridor have further reduced the perceived supply risk.

Citing a Goldman Sachs estimate published the same day, Trading Economics reported Persian Gulf oil exports have climbed to around 15 to 16 million barrels per day, a level still well below the pre-conflict range of 22 to 24 million barrels per day but far above the low of roughly 5 to 6 million barrels per day recorded in March 2026. Iran and Oman have agreed on a revenue-sharing framework for the strait, though Tehran has stressed the deal does not mean an immediate reopening of the route.

Iranian Tanker Near Kharg Island Struck by 4 US Projectiles

According to Tasnim, carried by Donya-e-Eqtesad, a small Iranian tanker was struck by a US military missile attack near Kharg Island's anchorage, about six miles from the island, on the morning of Saturday, September 5, 2026 (14 Shahrivar 1405). Per the report, the vessel was hit by 4 projectiles fired by US forces, and several explosions were heard from the direction of the Persian Gulf and Kharg Island shortly before the report was published. Local sources said the incident caused no casualties and that the tanker's crew were evacuating the vessel. Daneshjoo News Agency, carried by Khabaronline, confirmed the incident by publishing images of the struck tanker and of Kharg Island's condition afterward. Kharg Island is Iran's main crude oil export terminal, and prior reports estimate roughly 90 percent of the country's crude exports are loaded there, so any incident in the area can affect oil and currency markets. Further details on the extent of damage have not yet been released by responsible authorities.

Oil Climbs in Global Markets, on Track for Biggest Weekly Gain Since Mid July

According to Boursenews, citing Reuters, oil prices rose in global trading on Friday, 13 Shahrivar 1405 (September 4, 2026); Brent crude futures gained 0.2 percent to 95.67 dollars a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate gained 0.3 percent to 91.56 dollars a barrel. Since the start of this week, Brent has risen 7.1 percent and WTI 9.8 percent, putting both on track for their biggest weekly gain since the week ending July 20, a rise linked to intensifying military tension between the United States and Iran and concern over supply risk in West Asia. Per the Reuters report, two Iraqi energy officials said Wednesday that Iraq's oil exports rose from about 1.35 million barrels a day in July to about 2.34 million barrels a day in August. Shipping trackers Kepler, Vortexa and TankerTrackers estimate that oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain about 6 to 8 million barrels a day below pre war levels, a figure that contradicts a claim by US President Donald Trump that traffic has returned close to normal, near 18 million barrels a day; traders have dismissed that claim.
