Turkish finance minister: revenue from Iranian gas imports may only be spent on food and medicine
Sep 13, 2026
Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek told reporters that Ankara does not pay Iran directly for its gas imports and that the funds are instead held in a tightly regulated account under an understanding with the United States. He said Iran can only draw on that account to pay for permitted goods, including food and medicine, under a defined framework. Simsek also described Iran's share of Turkey's gas imports as relatively limited, adding that the United States has become one of Turkey's main suppliers of liquefied natural gas.

Saudi Arabia canceled some crude oil shipments to Europe on September 16, 2026 (25 Shahrivar 1405), after drone attacks disabled its strategic East to West pipeline to the Red Sea, Al Jazeera reported. The rare move forced buyers to scramble for alternative supplies. An Iraqi source cited by Al Jazeera attributed the September attack to a splinter armed faction. Separately, Trading Economics reported the same day that US heating oil prices held above $5.20 a gallon, near record highs, as the pipeline shutdown compounded existing shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Global benchmark Brent crude has traded above $100 a barrel this week amid the regional supply disruptions.
