A one hundred fifty million ton export record made the headline, but the real number was hidden elsewhere. Iran's customs put out the 1404 data: one hundred ninety one million tons of goods moved. The value of each ton of non-oil exports came to about three hundred forty three dollars. Export weight stayed almost flat, yet dollar earnings fell by roughly ten percent. Last year each ton fetched about three hundred eighty dollars; this year, three hundred forty three. Value per ton is really a measure of how good a country's export basket is. Iran's basket is full of raw and semi processed goods: heavy, but cheap. Petrochemicals, gas condensate, steel, cement, pistachios and plastics lead the list. The top five destinations are China, Iraq, Türkiye, the Emirates and Afghanistan. When there are few buyers, the seller's bargaining power quietly drops.
