For weeks the headlines have tracked the dollar's records, but the number that actually turned yesterday was the stock index: Tehran's TEDPIX closed Monday up about 1.2 percent (nearly 58,000 points) at 4,813,503, its first green session after seven straight red ones. The free-market dollar, near 194,000 tomans earlier in the week, settled calm around 187,700, and spot gold climbed back above 4,000 dollars overnight, toward about 4,040.

For weeks all eyes were on the dollar; yesterday the stock index turned the page. Tehran's index rose nearly fifty-eight thousand points Monday, its first green day in eight. The free dollar held near 187,700 tomans and the exchange-center dollar near 150,900. The main index now stands at 4,813,503 points, up about one percent on the day. The free dollar, near 194,000 tomans early in the week, has now calmed. A gram of 18-carat gold was about 18 million tomans and the Emami coin near 183 million. Spot gold crossed back above 4,000 dollars overnight, up toward about 4,040. Bitcoin traded near 65,500 dollars and ether near 1,923. The gap between the free and exchange-center dollar is about 36,800 tomans, near 24 percent. Factory rebar was about 70,000 tomans a kilo and bulk Tehran cement near 4 million a ton. With the calmer dollar, price rises eased, and Iran Iran Khodro announced new instant sales. The bourse's real test is retail money; about 4.8 trillion tomans left on Saturday. Brent crude is near 88 dollars and global gold sits above 4,000. The yuan at the exchange center was about 22,300 tomans and the dirham near 51,400.
