Bitcoin Tops $72,000 to Its Highest Since Early June as the US Treasury Doubles Long-Term Bond Buybacks (Thursday, 20 August 2026)

Bitcoin climbed about 5.3% on Thursday, 20 August 2026, pushing past $72,000 to $72,415, its highest level since early June, according to CoinGecko and Sahmino data. The jump accelerated after the US Treasury said it would double buybacks of old long-term government bonds, a move markets read as indirect quantitative easing that weakens the dollar and lifts scarce assets like bitcoin. Around $1.5 billion of short positions were forced to cover.

Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, jumped on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, and by Thursday evening (20 August) had pushed past $72,000. Based on CoinGecko data and Sahmino's bitcoin price feed, one bitcoin stood at $72,415 at 19:38 Tehran time, about 5.3% above the previous day. That is its highest level since early June, and it comes after months of selling pressure.

Background

Bitcoin had been struggling to recover since a sharp crash last October. According to CoinGecko data, that sell-off liquidated more than $19 billion in positions and dragged the price roughly 40% below its $115,000 level. Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, estimates the cycle bottom formed near $58,000 in early summer (an analytical estimate). Just two weeks ago, on the evening of 6 August, bitcoin was stuck around $64,500 and had failed to clear $65,000, which means the token is up more than 12% in two weeks.

The numbers

In the 24 hours to Thursday evening, the gains were not limited to bitcoin. Based on live CoinGecko data (19:38 Tehran time), ethereum rose about 10.8% to $2,324 and ripple about 18.7% to $1.26; the larger altcoins actually outran bitcoin itself. Comparing these figures with the earlier Wednesday report (bitcoin at $69,327, per Khabar Online citing ISNA) shows the buying wave carried on into Thursday night.

The drivers

The main trigger was the US Treasury's decision to double the volume of its buybacks of old, long-term government bonds. According to Matt Mena, senior strategist at research firm 21Shares (via ISNA), markets treated the step as a form of "indirect quantitative easing", a policy that weakens the dollar and lifts scarce assets such as bitcoin, which are seen as a hedge against currency debasement. The second factor was technical: as the price rose, short sellers were forced to buy to close their positions, and about $1.5 billion of shorts were covered. 21Shares says roughly $700 million of bitcoin was bought in a single minute, possibly the largest short-covering rush in bitcoin's history. In the background, spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) drew about $1 billion of inflows in the first two weeks of August. The rally is unfolding against a crypto-friendly turn in Washington; last week the heads of the largest exchanges were hosted at the White House.

Why it matters for Iranians

For an Iranian investor, the transmission channel is clear. Many Iranians hold part of their savings as Tether (a dollar-pegged stablecoin) and bitcoin; Tether mostly serves as a shield against rial depreciation, while bitcoin is the more volatile, speculative asset. The domestic Tether rate stood at 188,943 tomans (1,889,430 rials) on Thursday evening, 20 August, per Sahmino prices. A global bitcoin rally raises the dollar value of holders' coins, but because the local price of crypto is also tied to the Tether-to-rial rate, the final gain or loss depends on both the global move and the domestic exchange rate.

Outlook

This section is analysis and outlook, not settled fact. Zach Pandl (Grayscale) says the rally may signal that bitcoin's bear market has passed its worst, and that for long-horizon investors this is an attractive time to allocate. Even so, two caveats stand out: first, at current levels bitcoin is still about 37% below its $115,000 October peak; second, part of today's jump came from forced short covering, a technical factor whose durability is not guaranteed. The next direction will depend on continued ETF inflows and the path of US interest-rate expectations.

The bottom line

On Thursday, 20 August, bitcoin rose about 5.3% past $72,000 to its highest since early June, driven by the US Treasury doubling its long-term bond buybacks and a forced $1.5 billion short squeeze. The key point: large as it is, this jump still leaves bitcoin about 37% below its all-time high, and part of it is technical in origin, so today's momentum should be read with caution and an eye on whether real demand persists.

What to watch

  • Inflows to or outflows from bitcoin ETFs in the days ahead
  • The reaction of the dollar index and US Treasury yields to the buyback policy
  • The domestic Tether-to-rial rate and its gap with the free-market dollar
  • Whether bitcoin holds $72,000 or gives it back once the short covering fades
