Today's Top Headlines

- A key US crypto bill stalled in the Senate; the industry has spent over $225 million on lobbying and donations this year (Donya-e-Eqtesad citing the Financial Times, today).
- Wall Street set records: the S&P 500 topped 7,700 for the first time and the Dow hit a record 54,086, on hopes for a Strait of Hormuz reopening (Al Jazeera; Saturday, Aug 8).
Currency
The free-market dollar fell 2,120 tomans (1.14%) Saturday evening to 185,900 tomans; per EcoIran, the retreat came alongside progress in talk of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which also pulled tether and the UAE dirham lower. But the drop did not hold: per live tracking from Alanchand, the dollar rose 0.32% (6,000 rials) today to 186,400 tomans by 11:20 a.m. On the official side, the Iran Trade and Currency Exchange Center's negotiated ("tavafoghi") rate updated twice this morning: the sell rate rose 198 tomans at 8:03 a.m. to 154,650 tomans, and the buy rate rose to 153,258 tomans at 9:33 a.m. That leaves the official rate roughly 17% below the free market, a gap that has held fairly steady in recent days.
Gold and Coin
The Emami coin rose 1,505,000 tomans (0.81%) Saturday evening to 186,525,000 tomans, but the real story was the premium: it jumped 867,000 tomans (32.28%) in a single day to 3,553,000 tomans as the dollar retreated. Eighteen-karat gold was little changed in this morning's trading (as of 10:29 a.m.), holding near 19,763,100 tomans. Globally, spot gold closed the week's last session (Friday) up 0.14% at $4,343.43; per Reuters via BourseNews, gold posted its biggest weekly gain in seven months after a weak US July jobs report (-23,000) pushed the market's odds of a Fed rate hold in September up from 43.2% to 56.1%. Silver rose 0.16% to $63.54.
Stocks
A day after first crossing 5.5 million points (Saturday's 2.08% jump), TEDPIX kept climbing: by 11:00 a.m. it was up 47,068 points (0.85%) to 5,567,409. The equal-weight index rose a slower 0.13% to 1,575,585, a sign that large caps are outpacing small caps today. The Fara Bourse (OTC) index gained 0.17%. Main-board trading value reached 42,261 billion tomans in just these hours, versus 27,132 billion tomans for all of yesterday's full session; Fara Bourse turnover of 19,428 billion tomans in the same window shows similar momentum. Per Donya-e-Eqtesad, retail investors added more than 8,000 billion tomans yesterday, concentrated in Mobarakeh Steel, Shasta and Bank Tejarat, and per SENA all 40 TSE industry indices rose, with 20 (including telecom equipment, publishing, pharma, retail, agriculture, food, petroleum products, cement, banks and sugar) hitting records. For more context, see yesterday's Market Pulse.
Crypto
Bitcoin traded near $64,857 as of 10:28 a.m. today, down a marginal 0.32%, while ether eased 0.07% to near $1,919; both are trading in a calm, directionless range. Toman-denominated tether fell 0.24% (451 tomans) to 186,136 tomans. In the US, per the Financial Times (via Donya-e-Eqtesad), the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act failed to reach a Senate vote before recess despite the crypto industry spending over $225 million on lobbying and donations, and is now pushed to September. At home, after the US Treasury sanctioned another Iran-linked crypto exchange, Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati called the move "publicity fodder" and said the funds involved remain "in our hands" (per Hamshahri Online).
Steel
Arian Steel's 10mm A3 rebar was priced around 70,000 tomans per kilogram at the mill today, little changed from recent days; other sizes held in a range of 68,640 to 69,910 tomans. Today's sector news came from Mobarakeh Steel: per Donya-e-Eqtesad, the company delivered its first 1405 hot-rolled coil shipment of the year to pipe makers working on national water-transfer megaprojects, resuming shipments after a financing-driven halt. Estimates point to more than 500,000 tons of this year's Mobarakeh output earmarked for water, oil and gas transfer projects.
Vehicles
The car market is sluggish today, per Khabaronline (citing Tejarat News): the automatic Tara V4 rose 30 million tomans to 2.57 billion tomans and the manual Peugeot 207 rose 15 million tomans to 1.77 billion tomans, but most imports got cheaper: the Shahin GL fell 5 million tomans, the Citroen C3 XR fell 40 million tomans and the Tiggo 7 Hybrid fell 40 million tomans, to 1.885 billion, 3.31 billion and 6.08 billion tomans respectively. Among simpler domestic models, the Pride 151 held steady in a range of 1 billion to 1.15 billion tomans.
Building Materials
Monthly construction-material inflation hit zero in Mordad for the first time in recent months, per Donya-e-Eqtesad; rebar and cement prices have fallen 5-10% from their spring peak, which analysts attribute to fading wartime uncertainty, halted material exports and a steadier dollar. Even so, the cost of building a square meter in Tehran remains 80-90% above last year. In cash markets, a 50-kilogram bag of Type 2 Portland cement sold for 289,000 tomans (Abyek), 291,000 tomans (Tehran Cement) and 260,000 tomans (Saveh), little changed from recent days.
Regional and Global
Brent crude closed the week's last session (Friday, Aug 7) up 1.82% ($1.49) at $83.55, but still shed more than 8% for the week; per Kepler data cited by Reuters via BourseNews, only 8 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on August 6, and hopes for a full reopening kept pressure on prices. Citigroup raised its Q3 Brent forecast to $80, while Goldman Sachs sees $80-90, or as high as $120 if the strait stays closed. The dollar index (DXY) closed the week down 0.39% at 99.54, though it remains up roughly 1.4% year over year. Spot gold, as noted above, posted its biggest weekly gain in seven months. On Wall Street, per Al Jazeera, the S&P 500 topped 7,700 for the first time and the Dow hit a record 54,086; Japan's Nikkei rose 3.7% and South Korea's Kospi rose 3.8%. The US and Japan also carried out their first coordinated currency intervention since 2011, pulling the yen back from a 40-year low of 163 per dollar to 157; the main concern among observers is Japan's $1.114 trillion holding of US Treasuries. On Hormuz, an IRGC spokesman said reopening "has its own independent mechanism," while Foreign Minister Araghchi called the arrangement with Oman "very close"; market analysts say this speculation is behind Tehran's two-day rally and the dollar's relative calm.
Bottom Line
TEDPIX extended yesterday's rally today, putting stocks in the lead for a second straight day, while the dollar clawed back part of last night's drop and domestic gold stayed calm; only the coin premium jumped on its own. One thing worth remembering: by 11:00 a.m. alone, today's main-board trading value had already topped the whole of yesterday's full-day total. Today's verdict so far is clear: stocks are still setting the pace, not the dollar or gold.
