The Bank of England held its policy rate at 3.75% as the number of members voting to hike rose to three
Jul 31, 2026
The Bank of England held its policy rate unchanged at 3.75 percent on Thursday, 30 July 2026 (8 Mordad 1405), a decision in line with market expectations.
The Monetary Policy Committee vote shows that of nine members, six voted to hold the rate and three voted to raise it, with no member calling for a cut. At the previous meeting, two members had voted to hike and seven to hold, so one further member has joined those favouring tighter policy.
The Bank of England simultaneously published its Monetary Policy Report and the meeting minutes, and Governor Andrew Bailey delivered a speech the same day. The decision came a day after the US Federal Reserve held its rate in the 3.5 to 3.75 percent range, where three members likewise sought an increase. A tilt among major central banks toward tighter policy is one of the variables affecting the value of the dollar and the global gold price.

Iranian Railways: trains on the China to Iran corridor rose from one a year to 60, but most cargo still travels without an official Iranian bill of lading
Shahriar Naghizadeh, director general for foreign trade at the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, told the 17th meeting of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce transport commission on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), that trains arriving from China mostly do not enter the country under an official Iranian bill of lading, which limits the railway's ability to manage the route. He said several unaffiliated companies move consignments to the border each day, causing congestion on the rail lines and disrupting customs clearance. Naghizadeh said the number of trains running on the route has risen from an average of one a year over the past decade to 60 last year, with freight volumes passing 200,000 tonnes. He also reported the removal of an 80 dollar transhipment fee in Turkmenistan and an increase in train acceptance capacity from one to four trains a day. Despite congestion of about 50 trains at the China and Kazakhstan borders and journey times stretching to 35 days, he said the transit route has been maintained. At the same meeting Gholamhossein Valadi, director general of Tehran Railways, reported 182 percent growth in rail transit at the Aprin dry port and an increase in its freight volume from 83,000 tonnes to 200,000 tonnes.

South Korea to start importing Argentine crude next year with an initial cargo of about 880,000 barrels
Wi Sung-lac, South Korea's national security adviser, said on Friday, 31 July 2026 (9 Mordad 1405), that the country plans to begin importing crude oil from Argentina next year in order to diversify its energy sources beyond West Asia. He said that after a trial import by a South Korean company this year, an initial purchase of about 880,000 barrels is planned. The announcement came during a visit to Buenos Aires by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. Lee and Argentine President Javier Milei agreed on Friday that their governments would support a durable start to crude oil trade. Wi said the volume is not yet large but is a suitable start, and could grow as Argentina raises oil and gas output and expands its export capacity. The two sides also agreed to explore wider cooperation on natural gas, nuclear energy and critical minerals including lithium and copper. Seoul has described the agreement as part of a broader effort to reduce the geopolitical risk of its heavy dependence on West Asian crude.

Rosatom cargo ship sinks in the Black Sea after a Ukrainian drone attack, with all 17 crew rescued
Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia's state corporation Rosatom, said on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), that two Ukrainian drones attacked a civilian vessel belonging to the company in the Black Sea in the early hours of that day and that the ship sank after the damage it sustained. He said the vessel was carrying goods including frozen food and construction materials, and that all 17 crew members survived. Likhachev described the action as "piracy". Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack in a message on X, saying Ukrainian defence forces had hit a Russian container ship named Yanina, sailing under the Russian flag, which he said had a capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes. He claimed the vessel was under sanctions. In recent weeks Russia and Ukraine have both stepped up attacks on ships each side says are aiding the other's war effort, turning the Black Sea into one of the main arenas of the confrontation.
