Iran Market Pulse: Sunday Morning, July 19, 2026; Gram Gold Leaps Nearly 5% Into the 19-Million Channel as the Free-Market Dollar Sets a 194,500-Toman Record

On the morning of Sunday, 28 Tir 1404 (19 July 2026), the Tehran bourse reopens amid a multi-week slide. Saturday evening the free-market dollar hit a fresh record near 194,500 toman and a gram of 18-karat gold jumped almost 5% into the 19-million-toman channel; the less-watched twist was that because coins rose slower than gold, the Emami coin premium deflated about 19% to roughly 6 million toman.

When gold runs faster than coins, the premium melts away. On the morning of Sunday, 28 Tir 1404 (19 July 2026), the market carries the week forward after a day dominated by a heavy move in the domestic gold market: a gram of 18-karat gold surged nearly 5% on Saturday evening to about 19,138,000 toman, entering the 19-million channel, even as global spot gold stayed almost flat. That means the engine behind the domestic gold rally was not the world market but the fresh record in the free-market dollar, which jumped Saturday evening to around 194,500 toman. The less-watched story lay elsewhere: because the coin price rose slower than melt gold, the Emami coin premium compressed nearly 19% to about 6 million toman. The Tehran Stock Exchange, which on Saturday logged its eighth straight down session with a 2.44% drop, reopens today into that same tense backdrop.

Today's headlines

  • Gram gold jumps, coin premium deflates: a gram of 18-karat gold rose nearly 5% Saturday evening, but the Emami coin gained only about 2.7%; that gap in speed melted the coin premium by roughly 19%, down to around 6 million toman (Sat 18 July, evening).
  • A fresh free-dollar record: the free-market dollar climbed more than 3% Saturday evening to around 194,500 toman, taking out the 191,000-toman record set at the start of the week (Sat 18 July).
  • Eighth straight down day for the bourse: TEDPIX closed Saturday down 2.44% at 4,777,285, its eighth consecutive negative session; real-money (retail) flow stayed negative (Sat 18 July).
  • Regional mediation continues: per news reports, Pakistan said its efforts to bring Iran and the United States back to the negotiating table remain alive; alongside the Oman talks on the Strait of Hormuz, this shapes currency-market expectations (Sat 18 July).
  • Oil near the 88-dollar line: Brent crude jumped 4.36% to $88.1; concern over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz keeps a risk premium alive in the energy market (Sat, pre-dawn).

Currency

The quiet driver of every domestic market these days is a single number: the free-market dollar rate. By Saturday evening the free dollar was quoted around a record 194,500 toman, a rise of more than 3% in a day and above the roughly 191,000-toman record set only a day earlier. On the official side, the dollar havaleh (remittance) rate at the Iran Currency and Gold Exchange Center was about 150,237 toman in its last update on Saturday morning, essentially unchanged. That puts the gap between the free rate and the exchange-center rate at roughly 44,000 toman (near 23% of the free rate), wider still than at the start of the week. This divergence is less a fresh domestic monetary event than a reflection of the geopolitical mood and expectations around the outcome of regional talks. Live rates are on the Sahmino currency page.

Separating fact from analysis: today's record is "what happened"; which way the dollar moves once the talks' outcome becomes clear is guesswork, not a priced-in fact.

Gold and coin

This is the day's main story. A gram of 18-karat gold surged about 4.9% on Saturday evening to 19,138,000 toman, entering the 19-million channel for the first time. The key point is that this jump was mostly a "rial" move, not a "global" one: global spot gold stayed almost flat, around $4,013, over the same window, so the engine of the domestic gold rally was the fresh dollar record, not a rise in the ounce. The Emami coin reached about 190 million toman (up 2.71%). But because the coin price rose slower than melt gold, the intrinsic gold value inside the coin grew faster than its market price, and so the coin premium compressed about 19%, from around 7.2 million toman to roughly 6 million toman. For a household torn between melt gold and coins, the practical meaning is simple: on days like this, when gold rises fast, paying the coin premium is temporarily lower-risk, because the gap between a coin's price and its intrinsic value has narrowed. Stocks

While parallel markets set records, the Tehran bourse sits on the other side of the field. TEDPIX closed Saturday, 18 July, down 2.44% (about 116,550 points) at 4,777,285, extending the persistent slide of recent weeks; the over-the-counter IFX index also fell about 2% to 37,503. Real-money (retail) flow has stayed negative through these sessions, and with no positive domestic catalyst, the market has tracked the currency and geopolitical backdrop. The key tension for today is the familiar one: a weaker rial is a fundamental support for export-oriented, dollar-linked names, but geopolitical risk weighs on the whole market; the balance of those two forces will set today's session. Index and ticker detail is on the Sahmino index page.

Crypto

The global crypto market has calmed somewhat from last week's tense days. Bitcoin was quoted early Sunday around $64,884 (a slight 0.34% gain) and Ethereum around $1,868, both a little above late-last-week lows. Domestically, the Tether-toman rate typically tracks the free-market dollar, so much of the toman price of crypto these days simply reflects the dollar record, not a change in the global price. The perennial reminder: the global crypto price is measured in dollars, and the toman price embeds the exchange rate.

Iron and steel

In the steel market, the Arian Foulad factory rebar rate in its latest update (Saturday, 18 July) was quoted, by size and grade, in the range of 66,000 to 68,000 toman per kilogram. Two external drivers shape this market: the exchange rate, which lifts the finished cost and the export price floor, and global steel and energy prices. With the fresh dollar record, the rial price floor is expected to firm; the other side of the equation is real construction demand, which has been weak in recent months and has capped any visible price jump.

Cars

The auto market is more wait-and-see than active in this environment. In heavily traded models such as the Saipa Pride 151, market prices are quoted around 1.1 billion toman. The market margin (the gap between factory and open-market price) remains sensitive to the dollar and inflation expectations; a fresh currency record usually feeds through with a lag as higher asking prices from sellers, but until real buyers step in, those increases stay mostly on paper. Factory pricing policy (the Competition Council and the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade) sets the supply side.

Building materials

In building materials, the cement price is sensitive less to the daily currency swing than to energy costs and seasonal construction demand. The bulk Tehran Portland Type 2 cement rate in its latest update was about 4 million toman per tonne. In the warm half of the year and with periodic energy constraints, the supply side is usually cautious, but weak project demand has prevented a price jump. Watch this market alongside overall construction costs and the exchange rate.

Regional and global backdrop

The pivot of the global market these days is still the "risk premium." Brent crude jumped 4.36% to $88.1; concern over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz keeps the energy market bid, and for Iran that is a double-edged sword: it lifts oil-export currency revenue on one side, while being the very source of the risk that has made the dollar and gold dearer on the other. Global spot gold stayed low-volatility around $4,013, which is why the domestic gold rally this time was homegrown (rial-driven). In the neighborhood, the Chinese yuan reached about 28,730 toman in the domestic market, mostly a reflection of the dollar's rise, its channel to Tehran being trade and imports from China; also, per news reports, the Basra-to-Aqaba oil pipeline plan, meant to bypass the higher-risk export routes for southern Iraqi crude, is back on the table, a sign of how the Hormuz crisis is reshaping the region's energy map. For a deeper look at what this tension means for Iran's economy, see Sahmino's analysis, Southern Iran Under Fire.

What to watch today

  • The Tehran bourse open: the index's reaction and real-vs-legal money flow in today's session, especially in export-oriented, dollar-linked names that benefit from a weaker rial.
  • The Exchange Center's morning update: whether the "agreed" rate moves toward the free-dollar record this morning or holds the gap.
  • The free dollar and domestic gold: whether yesterday's record holds or corrects on talks news, and whether the coin premium stays this compressed.
  • Global gold and Brent crude: gold holding around $4,000 and oil's behavior near the $88 line are the two external anchors for the domestic market.
  • Events calendar: follow upcoming assemblies and economic events on the Sahmino market calendar.
