Tehran's Dollar Slipped to the 186,000 Toman Channel on Sunday; Iran's Car Market Did Not Follow, and Some Models Got Pricier (18 Mordad 1405)

On Sunday, 18 Mordad 1405 (August 9, 2026), Iran's free-market dollar slipped to around 186,000 tomans in Tehran, its lowest level in weeks and well off its Tir-month (June/July) record. Iran's car market did not track the move: the Tara Automatic V4 and the manual Peugeot 207 both got pricier the same day, even as most assembled and imported models eased. Analysts point to sellers' price floors and weak demand as the reasons for the resistance.

Iran's free-market US dollar slipped to around 186,000 tomans in Tehran on the evening of Sunday, 18 Mordad 1405 (August 9, 2026), its lowest level in several weeks and well off its Tir-month (June-July) record. Iran's car market did not move in the same direction: the Tara Automatic V4 and the manual Peugeot 207 both got pricier that same day, while a number of assembled and imported models eased. The usual dollar-to-car-price link held up for, at most, one more day.

Background

The free-market dollar rate fell from about 193,700 tomans on 7 Mordad (July 29) to around 186,000 tomans by 18 Mordad, a drop of roughly 7,700 tomans, or about 4 percent, in under two weeks, according to Ecoiran. The retreat extends the dollar's pullback from its Tir-month (June-July) record of around 194,500 tomans, amid speculation that Iran, Oman and the United States are nearing a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Eghtesad Online's daily tracking of the car market, the Peugeot 207 Automatic Panorama fell over the same two-week span from 2.57 billion tomans (7 Mordad) to about 2.49 billion tomans (18 Mordad), an 80-million-toman drop of about 3.1 percent, less than a third of the dollar's percentage decline over the same period. Across that stretch the same car eased 10 million tomans on 9 Mordad, 32 million on 12 Mordad and 40 million more on 13 Mordad, then posted only a mild correction on 16 Mordad as the currency market calmed, before some other models reversed course entirely on Sunday.

This decoupling is not new. On 14 Tir 1405 (July 5), with the dollar barely moved, the Tara Automatic V4 jumped 195 million tomans (about 7.7 percent) in a single day, an earlier sign that Tehran's car market, in rallies as much as in pullbacks, does not always track the dollar move for move.

Sunday's Board

According to Tejarat News (via Khabaronline), Sunday's trading in Tehran's car market saw:

  • Tara Automatic V4: up 30 million tomans to 2.57 billion tomans. Sahmino's own end-of-day price tracking placed the same trim even higher, at 2.62 billion tomans.
  • Manual (hydraulic) Peugeot 207: up 15 million tomans to 1.77 billion tomans.
  • Shahin GL: down 5 million tomans to 1.885 billion tomans.
  • Quick S: down 2 million tomans to 1.185 billion tomans.
  • Citroen C3-XR and Tiggo 7 Hybrid: each down 40 million tomans.
  • Haima 8S and Tiggo 8 Pro Max: each down 10 million tomans.

At the same time, Sahmino's own tracked dollar rate stood at 185,600 tomans at 20:00 on Sunday; Donya-e-Eqtesad recorded the dollar that morning and midday at 186,440 and 186,160 tomans respectively, and TGJU (Tala va Arz information network) put the rate at around 186,490 tomans, all within the same 186,000-toman channel.

Drivers

According to Ecoiran, two factors explain the car market's resistance to the falling dollar: first, the distance some models still have from their price floor, as a seller who bought a car at a higher exchange rate is not readily willing to sell below that cost. Second, the ongoing trading slump: weak demand has kept prices from rising further, but that same slump, combined with sellers' price floors, has also kept prices from falling sharply. Ecoiran writes that the relationship between cars and the dollar has "shifted somewhat," noting that during earlier periods of a rising dollar, cars did not necessarily get pricier at the same pace either.

Separately, continued imported-car supply and domestic participatory sales schemes, including Saipa's Quick S participatory sale registration that opened Saturday, 17 Mordad, have added extra downward pressure on parts of the market, which may help explain why price declines have been more visible among assembled and imported models (Citroen, Tiggo, Haima) than in high-demand domestic models like the Tara.

Outlook

Ecoiran's own analysis argues that if the dollar's decline continues, the car market's current resistance could break; the outlet points to the Peugeot 207 Automatic Panorama's 80-million-toman drop over two weeks as an early sign of that possibility. Still, Ecoiran stresses it remains unclear whether these isolated declines will turn into a broad trend, writing that Monday's trading will be telling.

Bottom Line

Tehran's dollar fell Sunday to one of its lowest levels in weeks, but the car market did not reflect that decline evenly; some domestic models, including the Tara and the manual Peugeot 207, actually got pricier. For now, sellers' price floors and weak demand appear to be outweighing the exchange rate in setting Tehran car prices.

What to Watch

Monday's trading, 19 Mordad, will show whether this resistance holds or the car market reacts to the dollar's decline with a lag. The path of Iran-Oman-US talks over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which drove last week's dollar retreat, and the daily tracking of the dollar price and Iran Khodro and Saipa product prices, including the Tara and the Peugeot 207, will be the next signals to watch.
