Iran's knowledge-based exports grew ninefold in four years to $2,690 million, but 84 percent of it comes from just 36 companies (Wednesday, 29 July 2026)
Exports by Iran's knowledge-based companies rose from about $296 million to about $2,690 million in four years, a more than ninefold increase. But according to the knowledge-based ecosystem report covering data through the end of 1403 (March 2025), roughly 84 percent of that figure comes from just 36 companies, while more than 12,000 others account for the remaining 16 percent combined. The story of real growth, and of a fragility that is even more real.

Today, Wednesday the twenty ninth of July, let us open a number almost everyone misreads. Exports rose in four years from two hundred ninety six million dollars to two thousand six hundred ninety. That is more than ninefold growth, based on data through the end of the Iranian year fourteen oh three. Behind that number stands an ecosystem of more than twelve thousand certified companies. Combined revenue is close to two point eight percent of gross domestic product. But here is where the story changes: eighty four percent of those exports come from just thirty six companies. Each of those thirty six averages about sixty three million dollars. The rest average thirty four thousand. The reason is plain: exporting needs scale, banking channels, certification and after sales service. Five destinations, China, Iraq, the Emirates, Türkiye and Russia, take about seventy five percent of goods exports. When Western financial routes are closed, trade moves toward markets where settlement is actually possible. The steering council secretariat says knowledge-based firms make up two point eight percent of gross domestic product. For the Tehran market that means three things: a currency hedge, different margins, and customer concentration risk. To reach the Seventh Plan's seven percent, either a few firms grow larger, or many more start exporting. And the answer is this: the growth is real, but the statistic is still the story of thirty six companies. So no, twelve thousand tech firms are not exporting. Thirty six are.
